SUMMARY OF JOB DUTIES

The School of Art invites applications for a three-year, full-time visiting assistant professor in graphic design with a standard research, teaching, and service load to start in August 2020. The chosen candidate will be an important part of a growing area.

We are seeking a collaborative, curious and conceptual critical thinker who is engaged in the design community with an active research agenda. The ideal candidate will be able to teach across the curriculum with an understanding of contemporary design delivery methods and an interest in speculating on the future of design. Teaching assignments will be based on the individual s expertise, the needs of the area, and may include design-centric sections of the School of Art s foundation program.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design focuses on human-centered design research, designing for complexity and forward-looking speculative methods. We seek to prepare students to be proficient makers and thoughtful problem seekers and solvers by speculating the ways that design can impact and facilitate positive change. In addition to the BFA degree, a new master s degree in design is currently in the planning stages.

Duties:

* Teach two courses (or equivalent) per semester in consultation with the graphic design program head and School of Art director

* Assist in planning and implementation of new graduate degree in graphic design

* Maintain an active research record

* Service is expected, such as student mentoring, supervision of student-related activities, area and lab supervision, and committee work at the school level as assigned

* Ability and interest to irregularly teach graphic design-related content in the foundations curriculum

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: PLEASE ENSURE THAT ALL RELEVANT APPLICATION MATERIALS INCLUDE DETAILS ADDRESSING THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS. APPLICANTS NOT MEETING THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED FROM CONSIDERATION.

* Terminal degree in design or visual communication (e.g. MFA, MDes, MGD, PhD) conferred by the start of employment

* College teaching experience as an instructor of record or as a teaching assistant

* Demonstrated evidence of strong interpersonal and communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

* The ideal candidate can merge traditional design pedagogy with dynamic technologies and utilizes innovative approaches to teaching that can accommodate various learning styles

* Evidence of a recent professional body of work and a strong research record

* Bilingual, especially in Spanish
