The Lead Phlebotomist is required to perform tasks, which require some manual dexterity; these tasks include: venipunctures and computer data entry. This position is responsible for proper collection, labeling and transporting of blood and other patient specimens. The Lead Phlebotomist is responsible for overseeing personnel and the performance of the staff in their daily activity. This oversight includes training and monitoring staff for technical and customer service skills. Responsibilities of this position include working closely with and communicating specimen collection issues effectively with hospital departments and with outreach clients. The Lead Phlebotomist must be proactive to identify opportunities for improvement, resolve problems, give directives as indicated and provide appropriate documentation. The Lead Phlebotomist must have good organizational/scheduling skills to accomplish routine required tasks along with the unexpected tasks on a day-to-day basis. The majority of time is spent bending, standing and walking (up to 80% of work time), carrying and lifting up to 20 lbs. is required. This position has potential exposure to body fluids and communicable diseases. The Lead Phlebotomist must have verbal and auditory ability sufficient to effectively communicate with patients during procedures and with healthcare providers using the phone. In addition, acute visual perception is required to read test orders for requisitions or test labels. Manuel dexterity is required. Patient population is birth to geriatric.Licenses/Certifications Required
High School Diploma or transcription; phlebotomy certification preferredSpecific Educational and Skill Competencies Required
Good communication skills, organizational skills and the ability to operate standard office equipment. The Lead Phlebotomist must have a high school diploma or equivalent and must also have a minimum of 2 years experience in a hospital environment. Phlebotomy certification and supervisory experience is preferred, but not required.
