license Certifications: BLS, NRP, Fetal Heart Monitoring Must-Have:
BLS, NRP, and Fetal Heart Monitoring are required. Description: The
unit manages 15-17 births per month. The nurse will work in Labor &
Delivery, as well as Mother Baby, Newborn Nursery, and Couplet
Care. Responsibilities include caring for gynecology surgery
patients. The nurse may float to Med/Surg if there are no patients.
If uncomfortable with Med/Surg patients, the nurse will assist with
vitals and medication administration. The role includes all
responsibilities within the scope for laboring patients, triages,
and mother-baby care. Registered Nurses will collaborate with
Licensed Practical Nurses. The LPN is unable to labor or triage
patients and cannot perform initial assessments. However, the LPN
can support the RN with evaluations, turning patients, and
assisting with documentation. As the baby nurse, the initial
assessment must be validated by the RN. If additional help is
needed, staff can request a supervisor for assistance. In
emergencies, the LPN typically goes with the patient to the
operating room, allowing the RN to remain on the unit. Being a
small unit requires creativity, but excellent support and resources
