Law Clerk - Fayetteville, AR
  • Performing specialized legal research and writing in support of federal cases and matters through the research and analysis of statutes, legislative intent, judicial precedents, agency rules and regulations, and law review articles as they relate to assigned cases to include those of an especially complex or unprecedented nature.

  • Utilizing a variety of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases and other automated resources to research case-or program-specific legal matters, and to participate in assigned areas of civil proceedings, e.g. electronic discovery.

  • Performing legal research on particular issues and cases identified by the attorneys; researching cases, law, statutes, regulation, court rules, policies, procedures, legal periodicals, and other legal authorities that are relevant to the particular issue. Organizing these source materials by providing summaries, bibliographies, and indices for use in litigation. Utilizing a variety of automated legal research tools as well as public information databases and other automated resources to research case- or program-specific legal matters, and to participate in assigned areas of criminal or civil proceedings.

  • Reviewing investigative reports, testimonies, interviews, files, and documents for a variety of criminal and/or civil cases to become familiar with the issues, identifying pertinent material, and preparing comprehensive digests. Researching and summarizing factual aspects of cases. Reading and analyzing reports of investigating agencies, and sorting through and reading subpoenaed documents and identifying and summarizing portions that may be relevant to particular cases. Establishing and maintaining an effective system of compiling, indexing, and organizing this information and it sources.

  • Participating and assisting in preparation for trial by compiling, organizing, and indexing various evidentiary exhibits. Marking and identifying trial exhibits and drafting a list of exhibits to be offered at trial. Preparing narrative summaries, charts, tables, graphs, or other visual aids to be used at trial. he exhibits and visual aids must be designated and organized so that they correspond to the government=s theory of the case that is to be prompted during trial.

  • Assisting in the preparation of government and expert witnesses for trial. Participating in the interviews of potential witnesses, summarizing their prospective testimony, and suggesting questions for examination.

  • Preparing drafts of a variety of legal documents, such as pleadings, memoranda of law, trial briefs, appellate briefs, summons, complaints, indictments, answers, motion papers, and stipulations. Incorporating legal references and including an analysis of precedents related to the case. Writing initial drafts or summaries to be used in preparation of the final draft and then shepardize, proofread, and verify citations and statutory references against original sources such as legal texts, reports, etc., to insure correctness and conformance with source materials.

  • Compiling research notebooks and files regarding statutes, case law and controversial legal issues of special interest to the Criminal and Civil Divisions in the office.

  • Researching all relevant articles in selected newspaper, magazines, journals, and reviews, compiling biographical summaries on the authors whose work is being reviewed, and indexing these materials for continuing use by attorneys.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government security clearance.

  • Law degree required; currently attending an ABA-accredited law school and completion of 1 year of study may be substituted with Contracting officer approval.

  • Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court systems, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.

  • Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.

  • Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, and imaging.

  • Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
